Julia told us, "It is said the draughtsmen who designed the ring road in Coventry ended up wearing similar suits and overcoats as they worked closely together in the drawing office. This skirt is about the concept of work wear and uniforms. What is my artist’s uniform and its relationship to my home city? The running stitch on the skirt echoes the ‘pinstripe’ of business and marks the small repetitive steps I take from my home as I journey back and forth to the city centre here in Coventry as I create new work. Local precious-to-me landmarks are stitched into the skirt. The underside of the skirt is deliberately unlined, the stitch knots and construction are visible, a reference to the often-unseen slow labour of working with cloth and stitch."
The small scale city skirt is a unique artwork that can be worn or displayed in celebration of Coventry’s making heritage and landscape. All the a_shop artists in this pilot phase of the project have chosen to celebrate Coventry Cathedral in some way. Hence you will also find subtle reference to the Cathedral amid Julia’s detailed work on the skirt. Julia is offering a further two small scale city skirt commissions. For these commissions she will work directly with the customer to build their personal references into the work.
