Michala decided to paint her garden each day during each of the Lockdowns, completing over 200 drawings and creating a visual diary of the passing of time in one confined space. Each drawing captures a moment of time in the changing seasons, reflecting the weather and the artist’s emotional self during the pandemic. The work takes inspiration from Neo Romanticism, a movement which came about when artists sought to reconnect with nature, due to the angst and destruction of the Second World War. There are many hidden animals, bids, mythical creatures within the series of paintings that this print – Lockdown 1, Day 91 – belongs to. There are also figures, some female, male or genderless which appear as adults or children. The child represents emotions of innocence, vulnerability and fear. Some of the drawings have a sense of tragedy, the flora and fauna appear enigmatic, this is an allegorical landscape.
